This is the first book written to comprehensively review the regulatory properties of the adenylyl cyclases, a family of enzymes that play important roles in various areas of biology and medicine, including cancer biology, endocrinology, cardiovascular physiology and neurobiology. It describes recent research concerning the cloning and purification of the adenylyl cyclases as well as the unique regulatory properties of each adenylyl cylase. Specific topics covered include mechanisms for receptor coupling to adenylyl cyclases through the G coupling proteins, regulation of the adenylyl cyclases by protein kinases, Ca2+, and membrane potential. Furthermore, recent evidence indicating a role for the Ca2+ sensitive adenylyl cyclases in neuroplasticity is also reviewed.
