This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th International Conference on String Processing and Information Retrieval, SPIRE 2004, held in Padova, Italy, in October 2004. The 28 revised full papers and 16 revised short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 123 submissions.
