“I feel as if the world can’t be like it is. It seems full of finished works of art.” Lynne Cohen Nothing is Hidden showcases both well-known and unpublished works by acclaimed Canadian photographer Lynne Cohen, starting with images from the early 1970s. The book highlights her consistent exploration of uninhabited domestic and institutional interiors, presenting formally and informally arranged uncanny spaces. Cohen’s photographs are often wryly humorous, occasionally bleak, and frequently embody both qualities. Her work reveals a deep appreciation for the mystery within the ordinary, capturing what lies beneath the surface. This publication is the first in a series by Steidl celebrating the winner of the Scotiabank Photography Award, Canada’s largest contemporary photography accolade for established artists. Founded by Edward Burtynsky and Jane Nokes, Scotiabank is recognized for its philanthropic efforts. Cohen, born in 1944 in the US and based in Canada since 1973, has dedicated over four decades to photographing public and private interiors. Her extensive exhibitions include major retrospectives in Canada, France, and Switzerland. Cohen's notable books include Occupied Territory, No Man’s Land, Camouflage, and Cover. She has received numerous awards, including the inaugural Scotiabank Photography Award and the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. Co-published with Scotiabank, Toronto.
