World history was made almost 500 years ago in a small town in Central Germany: Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the church in Wittenberg, triggering the era of the Reformation. The following decades saw the development of the town on the River Elbe into a node of Protestantism, humanistic education, book-printing and art. To the present day the names Philipp Melanchthon, Lucas Cranach and Johann Faust are known world-wide. The many other personalities with links to the town (such as Shakespeare's Hamlet), the stories and history connected with the wonderful old buildings - all these and more can be discovered on a tour through the inner city, lovingly restored in recent years and listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The city tour brings the visitor to the most important places of interest in the centre of Wittenberg. On foot and in only one day - with the occasional welcome break to savour Wittenberg's hospitality - the almost 850-year-old history of the town can be experienced in an entertaining and informative way.
