The manual is one of the main results of a European project which aims on the enhancement of the conditions of volunteers' motivation and qualification in the field of drug addiction prevention and on supporting the exchange and cooperation in Europe. The manual addresses to responsible leaders and organisers of voluntary work. Different factors that take influence on volunteers' motivation regarding changing concepts of values are discussed and practical strategies for the support of motivation in practice are pointed out. Beside the recruitment of volunteers, the volunteers' needs and essential resources as well as limits of motivation will be mentioned. The second focus of the manual is set on qualification. Different phases, contents and design of volunteers' training are discussed as well as the assessment of training requirements. Beside these focal points, the manual gives an overview of the actual state of volunteerism and addiction prevention. A charter for voluntary work in the field of addiction prevention presents the common principles of the project partners and forms the ethical basis of the manual. A further chapter of the manual deals with the meaning of evaluation of voluntary work. The manual is especially meant for practical use. Therefore checklists, guidelines, exercises, questionnaires and further materials have been developed which can be used for the practice of voluntary work. An extensive bibliography affords further reading.
