Jarka Burian was, for decades, the primary western scholar on Czech theatre. First generation American with relatives still in Czechoslovakia, Burian spoke and read Czech fluently, and brought expertise in theatre history and production together with his language and culture to provide numerous books and articles that exposed the accomplishments of Czech theatre artists to the English-reading world for more than forty years.
