Set against the backdrop of early America, this generational saga explores the quest for land and freedom through the journey of Johnny Church's descendants. Jonathan Lacey, one of these descendants, faces challenges from Native Americans and frontier bandits while establishing his estate, Beulah, in Virginia's backcountry. The narrative culminates just before the Revolutionary War, highlighting Lacey's election to the House of Burgesses and the solidification of his family's legacy in what will become West Virginia.
