Pronunciation Drills is a text designed to aid foreign students in mastering the sound system of American English. The PD's can be used in the classroom, as well as for language laboratory work. Part 1 of Pronunciation Drills covers vowels and features of English stress and intonation. Part 2 covers English consonants and features of spelling. In The PD's, each vowel, consonant, and stress phoneme is drilled alone, then in contrast with similar phonemes, and finally in short sentences. Words used are of ultrahigh-frequency, and problems are introduced in order of importance. A selected list of special pronunciation problems, for 17 foreign languages, is given at the front of the text. This list indicates problems in English pronunciation according to the student's native language.
