Male cross-dressing has long been misunderstood as a phenomenon and historically carried much shame and secrecy. Whilst feminism was opening the bandwidth of acceptable female gendered identities through the latter part of the 20C, male identities remained predominantly constrained to hegemonic ideals: until now. Drawing on Queer theory and Post-Feminist philosophies this book introduces in a very real way the idea of transgender as a healthy and creative way for people of whatever biology to create and present a more congruent and honest gendered self to the world. Written in two parts, this book combines both formal academic research with auto-ethnographic methodology to offer a very readable text that places historical explanations of male cross-dressing into context and then illustrates how contemporary scientific knowledge can offer new insight and potential. The latter part of the book then offers, through a deeply personal and emotive narrative, a powerful insight into the world of a transgender person.
