The collection of contributions from a conference offers a compelling insight into art historical research focused on early modern Central Europe. It includes studies on various topics such as art and the Reformation, Renaissance decorative programs with philosophical and theological implications, the activities of painting guilds in the 17th and 18th centuries, the phenomenon of Baroque portraiture, the local artistic center of Baroque in Znojmo, and architectural education during the Enlightenment. The publication also presents an intriguing comparison of methodological approaches from both domestic and North American art historians of the emerging generation. This work is published in English in collaboration with the Seminar of Art History at Masaryk University. The texts stem from a symposium titled “Parallel Inquiries: Art and Visual Culture in Early Modern Central Europe,” held in Brno on March 23, 2012, which brought together doctoral students from Princeton University and Masaryk University. Despite their geographical distance and diverse themes, participants shared a common interest in visual culture of the early modern era in Central Europe. The symposium facilitated personal interactions and showcased the complementary nature of different local and transatlantic approaches.
