To celebrate the 60th birthday of Siegmund Prillwitz, founder of the Institute for German Sign Language at Hamburg University, and to honor his three decades of dedication to sign language research, a Festschrift has been published featuring contributions from sixteen esteemed researchers and teams worldwide. This collection, titled "Fortschritte in der Gebärdensprachforschung — Festschrift für Siegmund Prillwitz / Progress in Sign Language Research — In Honor of Siegmund Prillwitz," showcases the high regard in which Prillwitz is held internationally. Contributors include notable figures such as Harlan Lane, Carol Padden, and Sherman Wilcox from the USA, Adam Schembri from Australia, and others from various countries including England, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Austria, Greece, and Germany. The volume's dual title reflects that thirteen of the sixteen papers are in English, with only three in German. The contributions address the history of sign language communities, linguistic analyses, and educational insights, encompassing a range of European and non-European sign languages. Many papers also compare different languages, highlighting significant universal linguistic aspects.
