Er studierte an der New Yorker Columbia Universität, wo er unter anderem auf Thomas Merton und Ad Reinhardt traf, die beide zu engen Vertrauten werden sollten. Er arbeitete als Dozent, als Filmkritiker, Drehbuchautor und Redakteur für das Magazin „New Yorker“, bevor er 1962 zunächst auf die griechische Inseln Kalymnos und später Patmos zog, wo er fast 40 Jahre lebte und arbeitete.
