Almora (1680 Meter über dem Meer) ist die letzte Bergstation nach der Grenze zu, wo europäische oder vielmehr angloindische Gesellschaft zu finden ist. Ich machte es für einige Tage zu meinem Hauptquartier. Es war meine Absicht, einige zuverlässige Bergbewohner, vielleicht Gurkhas, als Begleiter zu mieten. ... Schwer lastete auf meinem Gemüt die Frage der Erlangung von mutigen, ehrlichen, elastischen und gesunden Trägern, die gegen guten Lohn und gelegentliche Geschenke bereit sein würden, sich den vielen Unbequemlichkeiten, Entbehrungen und Gefahren auszusetzen, die meine Reise im Gefolge haben würde. ...
