Najczęściej jednakże są to prace o charakterze stricte militarnym i traktujące głównie o okresie I i II Wojny Światowej. Niezwykle mało miejsca poświęcono natomiast w literaturze polskojęzycznej tzw. erze żagla. Z tym większą przyjemnością chcielibyśmy oddać w państwa ręce klasyczną już na Zachodzie pozycję autorstwa Alfreda Thayera Mahana (1840-1914) pt.: „Wpływ potęgi morskiej na historię 1660-1683”. Autor, oficer U.S. Navy i wykładowca w Naval War College określany jest dzisiaj mianem „Clausewitza wojny morskiej” i „najważniejszym amerykańskim strategiem XIX wieku”. W swoich rozważaniach stworzył on podwaliny na których aż po dzień dzisiejszy opierają się założenia strategiczne największych potęg morskich. Niniejsze dzieło jest pokłosiem cyklu wykładów poświęconych zagadnieniom historii i strategii morskiej, które autor wygłosił pracując jeszcze jako wykładowca w Naval War College. Wykłady Mahana cieszyły się tak ogromną popularnością, aż w końcu ten zdecydował się wydać je drukiem. Niniejsze tłumaczenie oparte jest na pierwszym bostońskim wydaniu „Influence of Sea Power Upon History 1660-1783” z roku 1890, jednakże zarówno ze względu na jego objętość, jak również z przyczyn czysto technicznych zdecydowaliśmy się podzielić ją na dwa tomy, z których pierwszy mają w tej chwili Państwo w ręku.
