Der Code der Pharaonen erzählt die Biografie Jean-François Champollions und einiges über die Napoleonische Geschichte sowie die Funktionsweise altägyptischer Hieroglyphen. Champollion war der begabte Sohn eines Buchhändlers in Frankreich zurzeit der Revolution, der von einer unstillbaren Begeisterung für das alte Ägypten ergriffen war. Im Alter von zwölf Jahren studierte er bereits mehrere antike Sprachen, und inmitten einer allgemeinen Welle der Ägyptomanie gelang es ihm, den Wettlauf um die Entdeckung des Schlüssels zur Entzifferung der Hieroglyphen zu gewinnen. Es war nicht einfach ein Wettlauf -- es war ein Marathon! Der Durchbruch kam nach 20 Jahren harter Arbeit, nicht durch die rasche Lösung, die durch den in mehreren Sprachen und Schriften beschriebenen Rosette-Stein geliefert wurde, wie so oft behauptet. Das Buch beschreibt ausführlich das Leben und die Arbeit Champollions, die durch die politische Lage, Armut und eine geradezu hypochondrische Serie von Gesundheitsproblemen behindert wurde. Die Autoren haben in den großen Bibliotheken und Museen dieser Welt recherchiert; als Quelle dienten unter anderem Briefe und Tagebücher. Kapitel über Champollions Reisen in Italien und Ägypten enthalten so auch Auszüge seiner eigenen Schriften. Eine detaillierte Bibliografie ist nicht enthalten, dafür gibt es hilfreiche Hinweise auf weitere Literatur zum Thema. Der Code der Pharaonen ist im höchsten Maße lehrreich und flott geschrieben und kommt vielleicht in seiner Darstellung von schwierigen Zeiten und einer bahnbrechenden Entdeckung weniger dramatisch daher, als man erwarten würde. Es ist dennoch ein klar geschriebenes und weit reichendes Werk, das einerseits erklärt, wie komplex es ist, Hieroglyphen zu interpretieren -- und andererseits von dem Mann erzählt, dessen Leistungen der Entdeckung einer völlig neuen Zivilisation gleichkamen. --Karen Tiley
