Lew Tolstoj wurde am 9. September 1828 in Jasnaja Poljana geboren und starb am 20. November 1910 in Astapowo an einer Lungenentzündung. Seine Tante übernahm die Vormundschaft. 1844 begann er an der Universität Kasan das Studium orientalischer Sprachen, wechselte jedoch zur juristischen Fakultät und brach 1847 ab, um die Lage der 350 geerbten Leibeigenen auf dem Familiengut zu verbessern. Ab 1851 diente er in der zaristischen Armee und erlebte die Kämpfe im Kaukasus sowie den Krimkrieg, dessen Berichte ihn als Schriftsteller bekannt machten. Er reiste 1857 und 1860/61 nach Westeuropa, wo er Künstler und Pädagogen traf. Nach seiner Rückkehr förderte er reformpädagogische Ansätze und gründete Dorfschulen. Ab 1855 lebte er abwechselnd in Jasnaja Poljana, Moskau und Sankt Petersburg. 1862 heiratete er die 18-jährige Sofja Andrejewna Behrs, mit der er 13 Kinder hatte. In den folgenden Jahren schrieb er die monumentalen Romane, die seinen literarischen Weltruhm begründeten. Gisela Drohla, geboren 1924, war eine bedeutende Übersetzerin russischer Literatur und verstarb 1983.
