Alice Neel Bücher

Die amerikanische Künstlerin Alice Neel (1900–1984) wurde erst in jüngerer Zeit als eine der wichtigsten figurativen Malerinnen in der amerikanischen Kunstgeschichte des 2o. Jahrhunderts gewürdigt. Während der Phase der revolutionären Abstraktion nahm sie ihre eigene radikale Position ein und entwickelte eine außergewöhnliche und eigene Formensprache, stets mit dem Anspruch, in ihren psychologisch eindringlichen Gemälden »Wahrhaftigkeit« zu vermitteln. Neel zeigte die Ängste und Schwächen des menschlichen Geschlechts in einer Zeit beispiellosen politischen, sozialen und technologischen Wandels auf. Der Ausstellungskatalog präsentiert rund 70 Gemälde. Die Autoren werfen einen Blick auf Neels künstlerische Entwicklung, die Rezeptionsgeschichte ihres Lebenswerkes, ihre Beziehung zur Fotografie des 20. Jahrhunderts, ihre Position im Hinblick auf die zweite Welle des Feminismus und auch auf ihr persönliches Interesse an der europäischen Kunst des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Sie vermitteln dabei einen frischen Eindruck vom kulturellen und künstlerischen Umschwung in Amerika. This collection not only presents Neel's work but also reflects her commitment to representing difference, coinciding with her first major exhibition in Los Angeles in 2024.
