Denys Hay (1915-1994), dlouholetý profesor na univerzitě v Edinburghu a specialista na dějiny italské renesance, přibližuje bouřlivé období evropských dějin poznamenané válkami, náboženskými nepokoji, ale i významnými objevy a cestami, které zásadním způsobem rozšířily obzor Evropanů.
