In diesem 1934 zum ersten Mal erschienenen Buch widmet sich Znaniecki in hellsichtiger Weise der Frage nach den Risiken und Chancen von Modernisierung und Industrialisierung. Eine Analyse der aktuellen und voraussehbaren Probleme bringt ihn zu dem Schluß, daß nur eine neuartige «Zivilisation der Zukunft» Bestand haben kann, die gekennzeichnet sein müßte durch Harmonie und permanente Weiterentwicklung. Die Frage nach der Verwirklichbarkeit dieser Idee führt ihn zu einer Einteilung der Menschen in vier biographische Grundtypen (Wohlerzogene, Arbeitsmenschen, Spielmenschen und Abwegler), die er aber allesamt für ungeeignet zum Aufbau der zukünftigen Zivilisation hält. Er fordert daher die Schaffung eines neuen, eminent schöpferischen Menschentyps und macht Vorschläge, wie dessen Entstehung gefördert werden könnte.
