The ancient caravan city of Palmyra, situated in the Syrian Desert, was a vibrant cultural hub where diverse peoples, goods, and ideas converged from Europe to the west and India and China to the east. Positioned between the Roman Empire and the Parthian Empire, Palmyra's strategic location has led scholars to focus primarily on its connections with the west, often overlooking its ties to eastern regions. This edited volume aims to fill that gap by offering a comprehensive examination of Palmyra's interactions with its eastern neighbors during the first three centuries AD. The collected papers delve into various aspects of the city, including its art, architecture, material culture, languages, inscriptions, political relations, social dynamics, and religious identity during its peak. By exploring these elements, the volume sheds light on Palmyra's unique identity and its complex, often tense, relationships with Parthia and other eastern territories. The contributions provide valuable insights into the city's dynamic connections with the east and illustrate how these influences shaped and permeated Palmyrene culture.

In den letzten Jahren sorgte eine außergewöhnliche Ausstellung über den Luxus im alten Rom in der internationalen Kunstgemeinde für Aufsehen. Doch nicht Prahlerei, Völlerei und Ausschweifungen einer dekadenten Gesellschaft standen im Zentrum. Vielmehr strahlten in den Virtrinen des Getty-Museums die Opfergaben zu Ehren Merkurs, des römischen Gottes des Reichtums. Nach Jahren der aufwendigen Restauration war es gelungen, die einmalige zusammenhängende Sammlung aus Statuen, Tassen, Krügen und Platten zu restaurieren und in seiner ganzen Pracht zu präsentieren. Der Silberschatz aus der römischen Provinz zeigt nicht nur edle Materialien sondern auch eine meisterhafte Handwerkskunst, die Motive von mystischen Centauren bis zu trojanischen Kampfszenen lebendig werden läßt. Das Getty-Museum hat den Schatz in detailgenauen Großaufnahmen fotografiert und durch die besten Experten in diesem Prachtband kommentieren lassen. Ein Fest für die Sinne und den Geist!

Paul Getty Museum di Los Angeles e la National Gallery of Art di Washington - che vede riuniti alcuni tra i maggiori capolavori del mondo antico, provenienti dai più importanti musei archeologici italiani e internazionali. Circa cinquanta sculture in bronzo raccontano gli straordinari sviluppi artistici dell'età ellenistica in tutto il bacino del Mediterraneo. Se da una parte le opere ellenistiche segnano la diffusione, con Alessandro Magno, del genere dei "ritratti del potere", dall'altra rivoluzionano lo stile dell'arte classica introducendo pathos ed espressività nelle figure rappresentate. I saggi ci accompagnano in un percorso ideale attraverso statue monumentali di divinità, atleti ed eroi e ritratti di personaggi storici, in un percorso che conduce il visitatore alla scoperta delle affascinanti storie dei ritrovamenti di questi capolavori, investigandone anche il processo di produzione, di fusione e le tecniche di finitura.
