Pulses, particularly lentils, play a crucial role in the diet of many Indians, especially in eastern Bengal. Known for their high protein content and nutritional value, lentils thrive in semiarid regions due to their drought resistance and symbiotic relationship with Rizobium bacteria, which enhances soil nitrogen levels. India, the world's largest lentil producer, cultivates these crops on approximately 14 lac hectares, yielding around 1.4 million tons annually. However, the country faces challenges with lentil grain deficits caused by various diseases affecting the crops.
