Zdeněk Špinar war ein führender tschechischer Popularisator der Wirbeltierpaläontologie, spezialisiert auf Amphibien, insbesondere Froschlurche. Seine Studien auf diesem Gebiet werden bis heute häufig zitiert und referenziert. Bekannt ist er auch für seine wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit mit dem Maler Zdeněk Burian. Špinars Beiträge zur Wissenschaftspopularisierung und sein tiefes Fachwissen hinterließen einen unauslöschlichen Eindruck in der Paläontologie.
