Woman in the Mirror, 2005 bei uns erschienen und ab sofort auch als preiswerte Sonderausgabe lieferbar, war das letzte Buchprojekt, das Avedon noch selbst konzipiert hatte: eine Sammlung von Frauenportraits, die mehr als fünf Jahrzehnte und das ganze Spektrum weiblicher Identität umfasst – von Dovima und Twiggy über Marilyn, Maria Callas und Marguerite Duras bis hin zur namenlosen Passantin. Richard Avedon (1923–2004) war der wohl berühmteste Modephotograph des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sein Stil, diese unverwechselbare Synthese von Eleganz und Originalität, Perfektion und Innovation, setzte seit Mitte der 40er Jahre, als er die ersten Pariser Haute Couture-Schauen der Nachkriegszeit für Harper’s Bazaar und Vogue photographierte, neue und bis heute gültige Maßstäbe. Doch Avedon verstand sich immer auch als Zeitzeuge. Neben Schönheit und Glamour interessierte ihn vor allem das 'Gesicht' seiner Epoche. Seine Portraits von den Großen aus der Welt des Films und der Politik, der Literatur, Kunst- und Musikszene sind heute als Ikonen der Zeitgeschichte fest im kollektiven Gedächtnis verankert.
