Venedig 1498: Giuliana und ihr Vater, der bekannte Mosaikleger Il Sasso, ziehen nach Venedig, um im Palazzo Bragadin ein Mosaik zu legen. In der Öffentlichkeit tritt Giuliana als Junge verkleidet auf und nennt sich Giulio, denn ihr Vater sieht nicht mehr gut und sie hilft ihm bei der Arbeit. In Venedig ist gerade die Zeit des Karnevals und Giuliana schleicht sich nachts aus dem Haus, um ein Karnevalsfest zu besuchen. Sie lernt dabei den Patrizier Amadeo Bragadin kennen und ist von seiner männlichen Ausstrahlung fasziniert, aber auch von der Wirkung verwirrt, die er auf ihre Gefühle hat. Zu ihrer Überraschung ist es der Palazzo von Amadeos Familie, in dem sie das Mosaik legen sollen. Amadeo durchschaut ihre Verkleidung als Giulio und erpresst sie, ihm zu Willen zu sein.
