Un garçon grenouille qui veut épouser une princesse, des dragons qui se disputent à en déchirer le ciel, un chien merveilleux né dans une oreille, une ogresse vorace et pleine de poux... Les personnages de ces contes n'ont d'égal en richesse que les coutumes des peuples dont ils sont issus. Guillaume Olive et He Zhihong sont allés à la rencontre de peuples minoritaires dans les montagnes reculées du sud-ouest de la Chine. Ils en ont rapporté ces contes, sélectionnés pour leur force et leur fantaisie. En préambule de chaque conte est donnée une présentation de l'ethnie dont il provient, illustrée d'un portrait en peinture sur soie. Les contes proprement dits sont quant à eux illustrés de peintures sur papier de riz.
