In the last 100 years a combination of traditional and molecular methods have forged microbiology into a premier experimental science. One of the giants of early microbiology was the Dutchman, Martinus Beijerinck. Beijerinck is credited with many original discoveries in microbiology, especially in the area of enrichment and isolation of soil bacteria. On this page he made detailed notes and drawings about the bacteria that he cultured from the root nodules of leguminous plants-bacteria that were later discovered to fix atmospheric nitrogen and convert it into a form usable by the plant. Questa nuova edizione della Biologia dei Microrganismi di Brock, basata sulla undicesima edizione americana, dedica ancora più spazio ai concetti fondamentali di base, inserendoli nel quadro di una scienza moderna e in continua evoluzione quale è la Microbiologia. Per rendere il testo più facilmente adattabile alle diverse esigenze didattiche, l'edizione italiana dell'opera è stata suddivisa in tre volumi: il primo volume è dedicato alla Microbiologia generale mentre i successivi riguardano la Microbiologia ambientale e industriale e la Microbiologia biomedica.
