Renzo Piano, 1998 mit dem Pritzker-Preis ausgezeichnet, hat mit dem Bau der Fondation Beyeler in Riehen bei Basel einen Markstein der Museumsarchitektur gesetzt. Das vielbeachtete Gebäude, 'eine in den Naturraum eines Landschaftsparks hineinkomponierte Architektur' (Die Presse), wurde nach nur zwei Jahren erweitert: Im Sommer 2000 war der Anbau abgeschlossen. Aus diesem Anlass erschien 2001 die zweite, überarbeitete Auflage der erstmals 1998 erschienenen Publikation. Sie stellt das Gebäude aus verschiedenen Perspektiven dar: Entwurf und Ausführung, Gebäudetechnik und Konstruktion, Architekturgeschichte und Typologie, Landschaftsarchitektur und Präsentation der Sammlung - ergänzt um die wichtigsten Informationen zur bisherigen Ausstellungspraxis und zum Erweiterungsbau sowie um neue Abbildungen.
