The Commandos were formed in summer 1940 and their first raid was on the Lofoten Islands on 4 March 1941. Later, the attack on Vaagso showed how effective Commandos could be, destroying a German garrison, taking 102 prisoners, blowing up a coastal defence battery and destroying 18,000 tons of shipping at a cost of 20 killed. Amphibious raids pointed up to the need for better intelligence and control on the beaches, so the RN Commandos were formed. They took part in all the main amphibious operations from then on -- including Dieppe, Torch, Husky, Monte Cristo and Pantelleria, Salerno and Anzio, Elba, Arakan, Overlord, Walcheren and crossing the Rhine. Dne 6. října ve 14:00 hodin zahájila egyptská vojska pokus o násilné překročení Suezského průplavu. Pečlivě naplánovaná operace se stala pro izraelské velení naprostým překvapením. Písečný val Bar Levovy linie byl na řadě míst proražen vodními děly a následný pokus izraelských tankových jednotek o protiútok s těžkými ztrátami odražen. Válka na jižní frontě vyvrcholila operací „Gazela“, v jejímž průběhu se izraelská vojska přepravila na západní břeh Suezského průplavu. Egyptská strana byla sice vojensky poražena, nakonec se jí však podařilo naplnit svůj širší záměr – dotlačit Izraelce zpátky k jednacímu stolu.

Útok na letiště v Entebbe v roce 1976. Izraelský útok na letiště v ugandském Entebbe vstoupil do historie jako jedna z nejsmělejších protiteroristických operací. Dne 27. června 1976 unesli čtyři teroristé dopravní letoun společnosti Air France a přinutili jeho pilota přistát na letišti v Ugandě. Část rukojmích propustili, cestující židovského původu však uvěznili v budově starého terminálu. Jakmile se stalo zřejmým, že se těší podpoře ugandského prezidenta Idiho Amina, začala se izraelská vláda připravovat k vojenskému řešení krize. Kniha napínavě líčí průběh celé akce na základě četných dokumentů a očitých svědectví. Po překonání více než 3000 kilometrů, oblečeni v ugandských uniformách, maskováni jako doprovod diktátora Amina v mercedesu, dosáhli Izraelci v tuhém boji s místní armádou a teroristy vítězství i triumfu pevných nervů.

V květnu 1967 vypověděl egyptský prezident Násir ze země mírové jednotky OSN, rozmístěné od roku 1957 na Sinajském poloostrově. K hranicím s Izraelem přesunul velké uskupení vojsk a vydal rozkaz k uzavření Tiranské úžiny s cílem zablokovat izraelský přístav Eilat. Jednalo se o kroky, které bylo možno interpretovat jako zcela zjevné přípravy na válku. Počátkem června se proto izraelská vláda rozhodla na tyto hrozby reagovat. Izraelské vojenské letectvo provedlo úspěšný preventivní úder, v jehož průběhu bylo prakticky celé egyptské letectvo zničeno ještě na zemi. Jakmile se podařilo vybojovat nadvládu ve vzduchu, daly se do pohybu kolony izraelských tanků, postupující do hloubi Sinajského poloostrova. Během pouhých pěti dnů vrhly egyptská vojska zpátky k Suezskému průplavu. Toto je zpráva o průběhu sinajského tažení, jedné z nejsmělejších a zároveň i nejúspěšnějších operací moderní vojenské historie.
