Petras Cvirka je litevský pokrokový spisovatel a žil v letech 1909-1947. Většina povídek, sebraných do této knihy, přenáší čtenáře do staré litevské vesnice. Předními osobami v této staré vesnici bývali statkáři-kulaci a katoličtí kněží-ksendzové. Vesnická chudina, která tvořila většinu obyvatelstva, žila ve strachu a pod útlakem, v chudobě a nevzdělanosti.
