Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics and Social Sciences

Proceedings of the Second Informal Workshop, Held at the Certosa di Pontignano, Siena, Italy, May 27–30, 1991

This volume presents the Proceedings of the "Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics and Social Sciences" Meeting held at the Certosa di Pontignano, Siena, from May 27-30, 1991. Organized by the National Group "Modelli Nonlineari in Economia e Dinamiche Complesse" of the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific Research, the Conference aimed to bring together economists interested in innovative mathematical approaches to economic modeling and mathematicians focused on global dynamical systems theory. Building on a previous meeting in January 1988, the organizers sought to emphasize the application of recent methods, particularly those associated with "Chaotic Dynamics," within the social sciences. The goal was to assess their relevance in modeling economic phenomena, identify promising research directions, and critique instances where research devolved into mere mechanical applications of trendy techniques. This initiative aimed to evaluate the state of the art in nonlinear systems theory as applied to economics and social processes, hence the workshop's title and the content of this volume.
