Die Konturen von Picassos sich entwickelndem Dialog mit dem Meister der phantasmagorischen Figuration nachzeichnen. In seiner Jugend besuchte Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) das Prado-Museum und lehnte eine formale Ausbildung ab, um die Werke der alten Meister selbst zu studieren. Besonders El Greco (1541-1614) fesselte seine Aufmerksamkeit, und seine Bewunderung blühte bald zu Inspiration auf. Charakteristische Merkmale von El Grecos Stil wurden von Picassos ehrfurchtsvoller, aber auch subversiver Hand neu interpretiert. Während seiner Blauen Periode (1901-04) integrierte der Künstler El Grecos Vorliebe für verlängerte Figuren, nüchterne Hintergründe und einen Hauch von Mystik und Manierismus; in seiner späten Karriere umarmte er explizit seine Faszination für das spanische Goldene Zeitalter und rief El Grecos Palette warmer Brauntöne und Ocker hervor. Picasso trug maßgeblich zu einem Wiederaufleben des Interesses an El Greco bei, dessen Werke nach seinem Tod weitgehend in Vergessenheit gerieten, bis zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Durch den Dialog mit seinem Vorgänger etablierte Picasso einen Punkt historischer Kontinuität in seinem Werk. Dieser Band stellt 40 Meisterwerke der beiden Künstler gegenüber und unterstreicht die Tiefe und Langlebigkeit dieses Engagements.

James Turrell's first exhibition in a New York museum since 1980 focuses on the artist's groundbreaking explorations of perception, light, color, and space, with a special focus on the role of site specificity in his practice. At its core is 'Aten Reign' (2013), a major new project that recasts the Guggenheim rotunda as an enormous volume filled with shifting artificial and natural light. One of the most dramatic transformations of the museum ever conceived, the installation reimagines Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic architecture - its openness to nature, graceful curves, and magnificent sense of space - as one of Turrell's Skyspaces, referencing in particular his magnum opus the 'Roden Crater Project' (1979-). Reorienting visitors' experiences of the rotunda from above to below, 'Aten Reign' gives form to the air and light occupying the museum's central void, proposing an entirely new experience of the building.
