Die 23. Auflage des KÜKENTHAL wurde von Professor V. Storch und Professor U. Welsch gründlich überarbeitet und gestrafft. Besonderes Gewicht wurde dabei auf funktionelle und biologische Bezüge gelegt. Etwa 30 neue und aussagekräftige Abbildungen wurden angefertigt, ebensoviele herausgenommen. Das neue zweifarbige Layout erleichtert die Orientierung im Text sowie die Unterscheidung zwischen Versuchsanleitungen und wissenschaftlichen Fakten. Dem Wunsch vieler Benutzer folgend wurde der Kurs über Blatta orientalis durch einen über Periplaneta americana ersetzt. Außerdem wurde das Neunauge ( Lampetra ) als wichtiges Untersuchungsobjekt hinzugefügt. Wie für alle verantwortlich denkenden Biologen selbstverständlich ist es ein Grundanliegen der Autoren, daß die Präparation der Tiere sachgerecht, sorgfältig und in Achtung vor der Schöpfung erfolgt. Studierende der Biologie, Agrarwissenschaften und Veterinärmedizin können elementare Erkenntnisse zur Morphologie eben nur durch eigene Erfahrung im zoologischen Praktikum erwerben.

Gerade ist im Handbuch der Zoologie das Werk Chiroptera: Biologie erschienen, nachdem zuvor bereits ein Band der Systematik sowie ein weiterer der Flugbiologie, den Sinnesorganen und der Chronobiologie dieser Tiere gewidmet waren. Autor des neuen Chiropteren-Bandes ist Erwin Kulzer, dem es gelungen ist, mit seinen reichen Erfahrungen in der Forschung und seinen profunden Kenntnissen der Chiroptera eine unvergleichliche Darstellung aller Aspekte ihrer Ökologie, Biologie und ihres Verhaltens zu präsentieren. Die Texte werden durch zahlreiche Abbildungen und Tabellen ergänzt. Informationsreichtum und -qualität sowie das umfassende Literaturverzeichnis mit über 1300 Titeln machen diesen Band des Handbuches zu einem unverzichtbaren Standardwerk für alle Chiropterenforscher und -freunde.

A comprehensive english-language reference work on morphology, physiology and development of the moths and butterflies of the world. Written by a truly international team of specialists, the overall level of expertise of the book is unsurpassed, and several chapters present substantial amounts of original information. The book is richly illustrated, and all chapters have extensive bibliographies. Volume I has been published in 1998 and covers the evolution, systematics and biogeography of Lepidoptera. The goal of both volumes is to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge of this outstandingly important insect group.

The present volume continues Koopman's book on the systematics of the Chiroptera from 1994 with three further contributions, namely on the Biology of Flight, the Sensory Organs, and on Chronobiology. Written by internationally wellknown authors these contributions present information on their topics in unique breadth and depth, all of them furnished with an extensive bibliography. The language is either English or German; contributions in the German language having an English summary.
