Gösta Knutsson war ein schwedischer Hörfunkproduzent und Schriftsteller, der vor allem für seine beliebte Kinderbuchreihe über die Katze Pelle Svanslös bekannt ist. Diese gutherzige, wenn auch oft naive Katze, der einst eine Ratte den Schwanz biss, wurde zu einer zentralen Figur der Kinderliteratur. Knutsson siedelte seine anthropomorphen Katzengeschichten häufig im malerischen Universitätsstädtchen Uppsala an und bevölkerte sie mit einer Reihe von Charakteren. Pelle Svanslös repräsentierte Knutssons Alter Ego, während andere Katzen auf Karikaturen von Freunden und Bekannten basierten, was den Geschichten eine besondere Wärme und Intelligenz verlieh.

Dwa lata później przygody kotka bez ogonka ukazały się drukiem i z czasem weszły do ogólnoświatowego kanonu książek dla dzieci. Knutsson jest także twórcą postaci niedźwiadka Nallego (w Polsce jego przygody opublikowało Wydawnictwo `Nasza Księgarnia` w latach 60. XX wieku w tłumaczeniu Teresy Chłapowskiej).
