An American author tells the story of Czech Roma during World War II. The novel follows a Czech-Roma family from Southern Bohemia. The Czech father worked on the estate of a Czech nobleman. Nearby, a labor camp was established, initially for criminal elements, but later it became a site for the deportation of Jews and Roma. The Roma mother and their five children were forcibly placed in the camp. The father, with the help of other Roma, tried to save his family. However, they were deported to Auschwitz, and only one daughter returned. The author condemns Czech society and its elites for their attitudes towards the Roma and for collaborating with the Germans.
