Sie dechiffierten die altägyptischen Pyramidentexte, und so konnte endlich der Konstruktionsplan der Pyramiden von Gizeh rekonstruiert werden. - Warum wurden die Pyramiden errichtet? Welchem Zweck dienten sie? Was hat das Sternbild des Orion mit den Pyramiden zu tun? Was hat es mit dem geheimnisvollen Benben-Stein auf sich? Warum wurden die Pyramidentexte seit ihrer Entdeckung im Jahr 1880 nicht entschlüsselt? Fragen, auf die in diesem Band verblüffend einfache Antworten gegeben werden.

Für manche gravierende Ereignisse der Menschheitsgeschichte (Pyramidenbau, Untergang der Dinosaurier und eben auch den Untergang der Maya) gibt es bisher viele Hypothesen, doch noch keine eindeutigen Erklärungen. Die Autoren - Gilbert mehr journalistisch recherchierend, Cotterell mehr mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlich argumentierend - versuchen hier, von unterschiedlichen Ansatzpunkten ausgehend, dann aber ihre Thesen gegenseitig stützend, zu beweisen, daß und warum nach dem Maya-Kalender 3114 v.Chr. eine Weltepoche begonnen hat und 2012 n.Chr. dramatisch enden wird. Ausgehend vom gleichen Sargdeckel von Palenque, auf dem Däniken schon einen Astronauten sitzen sah, wird ein Zusammenhang zwischen Mayakalender, Sonnenfleckenzyklen und Humanbiologie gesehen. Wenn das Buch auch populär geschrieben ist, so sollten doch vor allem für die ausführlichen Anhänge (Cotterell) Grundkenntnisse wenigstens in Mathematik, Astrophysik und Astronomie vorhanden sein. Das Buch wirkt weit seriöser als thematisch vergleichbare Däniken-Titel
