This ebook addresses the lack of comprehensive literature on the reptiles of Europe, specifically focusing on snakes. It provides a concise account of their characteristics, distribution, and life histories. Professor Sordelli from Milan has contributed beautiful illustrations from his previous collaboration with the late Professor Jan, enhancing the descriptions with accurate visuals. Additional drawings by Mr. J. Green have also been included. The author acknowledges permissions granted by the British Museum, the India Office, and the Zoological Society to reproduce figures from earlier works. To enhance usability, an introduction summarizing general knowledge about snakes precedes the detailed account of European species. The author intentionally avoids overwhelming the reader with bibliographical references and synonym lists, opting instead for a more accessible format. Care has been taken to rely on trustworthy sources when compiling information. The species descriptions are primarily based on the British Museum's collection, which has expanded since the last catalogue was published. The author has also utilized Monsieur F. Lataste’s private collection and Dr. R. Gestro’s collection of Italian snakes from the Genoa Museum. Additionally, Dr. L. W. Sambon contributed a chapter on parasites at the author's request.
