      Die Schwestern Charlotte, Emily und Anne Brontë gehören bis heute zu den meistgelesenen Autorinnen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Ihre Werke erschienen zeitlebens unter den männlichen Pseudonymen Currer Bell (Charlotte), Ellis Bell (Emily) und Acton Bell (Anne). Charlotte Brontё (1816-1855), die älteste der drei Schwestern, arbeitete u. a. als Lehrerin und Gouvernante, nachdem sie in Brüssel an der Privatschule der Madame Heger Französisch gelernt hatte. Der erst posthum veröffentlichte Roman Der Professor handelt von ihrer unerfüllten Liebe zu Hegers Ehemann und zählt zusammen mit Jane Eyre zu ihren größten Erfolgen.
