Dies ist die traurigste Geschichte, die ich je gehört habe. Neun Jahre verbrachten meine Frau und ich in Bad Nauheim in enger, aber zugleich distanzierter Beziehung zu den Ashburnhams. Während er dort durch den Sport wieder zu Kräften kam, reichten unsere zwei Monate nur aus, um die arme Florence am Leben zu erhalten. Seine Beschwerden könnten auf Polo oder übermäßigen Sport in seiner Jugend zurückzuführen sein. Die gesundheitlichen Probleme von Florence waren das Ergebnis eines Sturms auf unserer ersten Überfahrt nach Europa, und die Ärzte hatten uns geraten, die kurze Fahrt über den Kanal zu vermeiden, da sie für sie lebensbedrohlich sein könnte.

Der Kaufmann von Venedig zählt zwar - wegen des glücklichen Endes - zu Shakespeares Komödien, aber die dominierende Figur des Juden Shylock trägt offenbar Züge, die das Stück durchaus der Tragödie annähern.
