A unique collection of five contemporary plays from 21st-century Hungary, translated into English for the first time. Written by some of Hungary's most highly prolific and commercially successful dramatic voices, these plays are being produced in their native Hungary by theatres that do not adhere to Viktor Orbán's values and offer a counterpoint to the commercial Boulevard Theatre scene of Budapest. Translator and theatre-maker Szilvi Naray-Davey champions these unheard voices through her performable and dramatically engaging translations. The plays are aimed at micro-budget productions and offer a special opportunity for students and small theatre companies alike to engage with these witty, politically irreverent plays, finally in English. Each of the selected playwrights has been in direct conflict with the Hungarian government and has been demonised by the state-controlled press. The five plays are thematically threaded together by their common use of strong leading female protagonists with an overarching theme of the family unit. Through the edited introduction the themes and feminine translation strategy discusses how the plays offer a microcosmic lens for understanding the paradox that today's Hungary exemplifies, making this a necessary study into the world of contemporary Hungary through drama.

Vymyslela rozprávku o hnusnom víruse, Korone, príbeh, ktorý pomôže malým deťom, aby sa nebáli neviditeľného zla. S dôvtipom a zábavným spôsobom opisuje putovanie vírusu vo vzduchu a po mori a snahu vedcov nájsť vakcínu a zachrániť svet. Die Akteure leben zwar an verschiedenen Orten und ihre Möglichkeiten und Wünsche weichen stark voneinander ab, aber eines haben sie gemeinsam: Sie stehen vor Augenblicken der Schicksalswende. Beinahe alle aber schieben die Entscheidung hinaus. Die unbeteiligt wirkende Erzählerin beobachtet diese Vorgänge aber leidenschaftlich und überaus empfindsam, als lese sie die Welt mit ihren eigenen Wunden. Sie schildert das vielfältige zwischenmenschliche Beziehungsgeflecht und während sie von schweren Schicksalen und zuweilen grotesken Szenen erzählt, blitzt überraschend ihr sublimer und sarkastischer Humor auf.

Všichni v tomto románu jsou sami. Malá holčička adoptovaná na konci čtyřicátých let, její pěstouni a později i její vlastní dítě, manžel a všichni příbuzní i známí: nedostatek lásky považuje každý bez výjimky za neměnný a jediný možný stav bytí. Životem se tito lidé protloukají na omšelé pavlači s oprýskanou omítkou a zápachem zeleninové kaše, na dosah ruky od bídy, na hony daleko od pomyslné normální existence. Potlačované pocity a vášně ovšem i tak občas pronikají na povrch a přinášejí osudové zvraty. Tento tísnivý a omezený, zároveň však průzračný svět je jako samo akvárium.
