Příběh Amandy Lindhoutové začíná jako úžasný cestopis inspirovaný magazínem National Geographic. Malá Amanda celé dětství vybírá z popelnic zálohované láhve, aby si mohla v charitativním obchodě koupit stará čísla časopisu, díky jehož reportážím uniká z neutěšených domácích poměrů do neznámého, vzrušujícího světa. Po střední škole začne pracovat jako servírka a veškeré našetřené peníze investuje do cestování.
