Peter Ackroyd wurde 1949 in London geboren. Er studierte Literaturwissenschaft in Cambridge, war Redakteur, später Chefredakteur des «Spectator» und ein führender Literaturkritiker der «Times». Er hat mehrere Romane sowie Biographien von Ezra Pound, Charles Dickens und T. S. Eliot veröffentlicht. Für sein erzählerisches wie für sein biographisches Werk wurde er mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet.
