Thaddeus Kosciuszko, born in 1746 in Poland-Lithuania, emerged as a pivotal figure in modern history. After fleeing his homeland due to a death sentence for courting a woman above his station, he arrived in America just after the Declaration of Independence, landing on Benjamin Franklin's doorstep with a revolutionary spirit and engineering talent. As a volunteer in the war, he quickly became the Continental Army's most skilled engineer, constructing fortifications for Philadelphia, devising crucial battle plans for the Battle of Saratoga, and designing Fortress West Point—plans later stolen by Benedict Arnold.
