Born in a village deep in the Cambodian forest, Somaly Mam was sold into sexual slavery by her grandfather when she was twelve years old. For the next decade she was shuttled through the brothels that make up the sprawling sex trade of Southeast Asia. Somaly se narodila v malé kambodžské vesnici, ale své pravé rodiče nikdy nepoznala. Žila střídavě u cizích lidí, na něž musela pracovat, a nakonec se jí ujal snad ten nejhorší z nich. U "dědečka" ji čekal osud podobný životu tisíců ostatních dívek v této části světa, kde ženy slouží mužům jako otrokyně. Somaly vykonávala nejtěžší práce, a přitom sklízela jenom rány. Jedinou světlou stránkou jejího dětství byla škola, kde se naučila číst a psát. Avšak už ve dvanácti ji "dědeček" prodal kupci, jemuž dlužil peníze, a o tři roky později potom "manželovi", který ji rovněž pouze bil a týral. Somaly si našla práci v nemocnici, kde pracovala jako ošetřovatelka v neuvěřitelně primitivních podmínkách. Všechno se léčilo aspirinem, hygienické podmínky strašlivé, ošetřovatelky byly pravidelně znásilňovány lékaři, ale všechno strpěly, protože za práci dostávaly odměnu v naturáliích, což jim umožňovalo přežít. Somaly se dlouho nevzdávala naděje a s nevídanou odvahou a silou bojovala s nepřízní osudu. Když ji však zradil i přítel, jemuž věřila, ztratila chuť žít...

Au Cambodge, des parents vendent leurs enfants dès l'âge de cinq, six ans en échange d'une centaine d'euros. Dans les bordels, les jeunes se prostituer pour cinq cents riels (quinze centimes d'euro). Somaly Mam, qui a aujourd'hui trente-quatre ans, retrace dans ce livre son enfance d'esclave battue, violée, et raconte avec émotion la destinée tragique de ces enfants - comme Thomdi, vendue quand elle avait neuf ans, décédée, ou Sokhone, vendue à huit ans, morte du sida et de la tuberculose à quinze. Pour lutter contre ce trafic, Somaly Mam (avec son mari Pierre Legros) a créé en 1997 au Cambodge l'association Afesip (Agir pour les femmes en situation précaire), une ONG à vocation internationale qui s'est développée depuis lors en Thaïlande, au Vietnam et au Laos, et qui a pour objectifs le sauvetage et la réinsertion sociale des personnes réduites en esclavage sexuel.
