Set against a backdrop of whimsical adventures, a sailor named Père Olifus marries a mermaid and embarks on voyages to a semi-mythical Far East, seeking fortune while haunted by the spirit of his abandoned wife. This tale, a collaboration between Alexandre Dumas and Paul Lacroix, blends humor and supernatural elements to explore themes of infidelity and punishment. Initially intended as part of a series, it evolved into a standalone novella, recognized for its unique charm and place in literary history as a flawed classic.
