Wessex is bound for the newly created Spanish Viceroyalty of the Ro de la Plata in South America. Gold has been discovered and the French Revolution needs it. Two Spanish treasure ships are to deliver the gold to Spain, but a scheme is devised to use Wessex to attack and take the gold. Donland is betrayed, mutineers take over Wessex and the yardarm is rigged for hangings. All this after Lieutenant Maddox is sent home to heal and replaced by a rather shady Lieutenant named Brown who becomes first aboard Wessex. From the beginning of the voyage there are inconsistencies, unexplained accidents and coincidences. Upon arrival in Buenos Aries, Donland is knifed and left for dead. Brown takes command and Donland plots his revenge and recapture of Wessex.

Wessex is relived of patrolling the coasts of Florida in 1791 and is sent to monitor the slave rebellion on Saint Domingue, which will be later divided into the island nations of Haiti and The Dominion Republic. Donland's orders are explicit, do not become involved! He does become involved when he rescues the recently widowed Emily Bostwick who is quite enamoured with the dashing Captain Donland. Adding to the difficulties of the patrol, Donland and his officers experience bouts of unexplained sickness. As Maddox states, it is like my guts was taken out and put back wrong way round. The slaves capture towns, forts and ships. There is no place safe on the island for any white man. Admiral Affleck, the Jamaican Station Commandant, orders Donland to find and to sink any vessel that might be used to threaten English commerce. What Donland does not know is that the rebels have plans to take Wessex and are willing to sacrifice the ships they have taken to do so.

No one is to be trusted and Donland is to use every trick available to him to succeed. The forces arrayed against him are powerful as well as influential. He is once again aboard Oxford and the five ships are ordered to sink Oxford and stop him from reaching England. In the end he must choose to be the king's man or to accept great losses, some which are dear to his heart.

How hard is it to hide a frigate? The Slave Coast of Africa is honeycombed with rivers and coves, each has to be searched and each holds hidden dangers. Donland navigates the perils of sea and land while contending with betray and deceit.“A trap always assumes the prey will react in a certain manner, if the trap is discovered before it is sprung then the prey decides a course of action. That action might be to lay a trap of his own, run away or barge right in with overwhelming force. The key is to spot the trap before it is sprung.”“Still, taking the frigate will be no easy task especially if the brig is able to lend assistance. We will be hard pressed to survive.”“Aye, but as I said, once we see the trap then we can turn it to our advantage.”Powell said, “Sharp eyes and the patience of a hawk will be required.”Patience was required but also daring to find and defeat the pirates. Donland has learned patience and his daring is never in short supply. He is a fighting man, as cunning as his foes and does not tolerate fools. When the trap is sprung it is a matter of victory or defeat.

England is at peace, it is uncharted waters for Donland and his command. He must navigate between alliances in the midst of spies and schemes.Fast, heavily armed frigates are being built using the plans of the American’s Constitution. Donland is unaware of the ships as he shepherds a transport to The Falklands. It is only when Sumerford comes aboard Oxford, that Donland suspects he is a pawn in yet another of Sumerford’s schemes. Donland is wary, but little does he know that a plan is unfolding that includes him in the destruction of the frigates. The French know that Sumerford has discovered their plan; he must die before he can share what he has learned. They dispatch a frigate and two sloops to intercept Oxford. Donland is forced into a cat-and-mouse game of pursuit. His fortunes turn when a gale scatters his pursuers, and he gains a prize. He proposes a daring raid that will risk starting a war. Deniability is more important than survival. Nothing they do must be traced back to England. The stakes are high and failure can not be contemplated, South America is the prize to be won or lost. Hornet is lost to him, sold! The war with the colonies is over and with its end Donland is without prospects. He, like so many others, is to be cast on the beach with half-pay. But, one of his previous exploits, the rescue of prisoners from Puerto Rico, brings him to Admiral Pigot's attention. Donland is ordered to act as a guide to lead a rescue party to free a person important to the crown. Donland is carried as a supernumerary aboard the frigate, Brune, commanded by snobbish Captain Sheffield. In landing the rescue party, Brune goes aground and is hammered by a shore battery. Donland, with only a handful of men is stranded on the island, pursued by pirates and is without means to escape. Donland is without resources with only David, Honest and Simon to trust. Captain Sheffield's final words are, "Succeed or do not return!" Only a man of great courage can in difficult circumstances rise above obstacles and opponents to achieve success.
