Colonel Voropayev is seriously wounded during the Patriotic War. As a one-legged invalid suffering from tuberculosis, he arrives in the beautiful Crimea, resigned to live out his life in seclusion, far from people and the world. Depressed by his health, he believes he is useless to society. However, he gradually realizes that the peace front and the labor front are just as significant as the battle line. By joining a collective of workers, he rediscovers the meaning of life. Through his journey, the novel explores themes of resilience, the search for purpose, and the transformative power of community, illustrating how even in the depths of despair, one can find hope and fulfillment.
