Franco Venturi, a leading European interpreter of the Enlightenment, continues his acclaimed multivolume work, Settecento Riformatore, which offers a synthesis of Western history before the French Revolution through the insights of Italian observers. Princeton University Press has published R. Burr Litchfield's English translation of the third volume, focusing on the period from 1768 to 1776. The narrative now progresses with the translation of the fourth volume, covering 1776 to 1789. The first part examines the political landscape and public opinion during the final crisis of the Old Regime in major Western European states, including Great Britain, Spain, France, and Portugal. The second part shifts to Eastern Europe, highlighting the rise of republican patriotism and efforts to reform the Hapsburg, Russian, and Ottoman Empires.
