The story begins in 1866 when reports emerge in English newspapers about a colossal sea creature attacking ships, capturing the attention of scientists. The impact throws Aronnax, Conseil, and Ned into the sea, where they find themselves on the back of what turns out to be a submarine. They are taken inside and imprisoned in a dark chamber. The next day, a man introduces himself as Captain Nemo and informs them they are aboard the Nautilus, which they must never leave to protect its secrets.
