This is a book of English poetry written between the Conquest and the Reformation, and is divided into four parts: the first showing what the poems are like and what issues their proper reading may raise; the second is a short, selective history of the medieval English lyric; the third considers some of the kinds of lyrics and some of the influences on them; and the fourth is a guide to this book and an explanation of what the author has tried to do in it.
