      Emile Durkheim untersuchte 1893 die Theorie der Arbeitsteilung daraufhin, ob sie tatsächlich zu gesellschaftlicher Integration und der Solidarität der verschiedenen Gruppen führen würde. Klassenkämpfe und ökonomische Krisen nährten seinen Verdacht, daß der vertragliche Interessenausgleich dazu nicht hinreiche, solange sich die Arbeitsteilung nicht bereits innerhalb einer integrierten Gesellschaft vollziehe. Genau dies setzt aber für Durkheim die Existenz einer gemeinsamen Moral voraus, die als Grundsatz und Leitlinie einer gerechten Gesellschaftsordnung dienen muß und die nicht rein vertraglich herzustellen ist. Durkheim hatte damit ein klassisches Argument formuliert, das die Bedeutung und Eigenständigkeit gesellschaftlicher Integration gegenüber den divergierenden Einzelinteressen betonte und die stets gesellschaftlich vermittelte und vermittelbare Moral zum zentralen Thema soziologischer Theoriebildung erhob.
